Brief

ABC Fine Wine & Spirits tapped Irish Titan to level up their online experience in tandem with their 125 physical store. BOPIS was a major focus of the build, with so many locations, Titans had to get creative with this one. Add requirements like location-based inventory, custom loyalty and rewards, and pricing without an out of the box solution added another layer of complexity to the equation.

ABC Fine Wine & Spirits family-owned brand that was established post-prohibition in 1936. They operate over 125 stores throughout Florida and approximately $20M+ in online revenue through two websites, abcfws.com and TheHumidor.com. Interestingly, they saw about 2-3x AOV online vs. in-store sales. They were focused on updating their in-store experience and wanted to their website experience to match, as well as drive their guests into local stores with a seamless BOPIS experience. BOPIS was a primary focus of the build due to zone-based pricing and shipping laws and regulations in Florida, utilizing their stores as pickup sites.

WHY

Our challenge? BigCommerce limits store locations to 100, and ABC asked for more than 125 with the opportunity for growth. We knew we’d have to get creative with this one. Add requirements such as location-based inventory and pricing without an out of the box solution added another layer of complexity to the equation. Their team had a strong vision for the experience they wanted customers to have, and they were set on making BigCommerce work exactly how they envisioned.

They wanted to combine their existing sites (abcfws.com and thehumidor.com) under a unified experience, a revamped look and feel to match their stores, incorporate their completely custom loyalty program, a fairly complex backend integration with their existing systems. No match for the Titans.

HOW

We sprung into action, we knew we’d use product variant options to represent each store’s location as a set store number and to hold quantities. By using the BigCommerce storefront API along with BigCommerce helper methods, we were able to manipulate the overall experience to function similarly to the BOPIS functionality. During checkout, the “Locate Items” function checks product availability and quantity at the home store location via OROB. If a product is unavailable, guests will be prompted about that specific item. When users have products in their cart and decide to change their home store to a different location, Irish Titan wrote custom logic that will update their cart product variants to match the new store number and verify those products have sufficient quantity in stock at the new store. BigCommerce’s zone pricing wasn’t the right fit for ABC so Irish Titan again utilized product variants to control a price based on the user’s home store, or default price if they didn’t have a home store. VAULT

The Vault” is an exclusive, invitation-only shopping experience for ABC Fine Wine and Spirits’ most valued customers. The Vault offers limited-time access to rare and high-demand merchandise, providing a unique and premium shopping experience. Single item purchasing, SSO, countdown cart timers, low inventory stocks, buyer groups, and more were all a major part of the Vault.

WHAT Titans plugged away at these challenges. Robust zone pricing and complex BOPIS customizations were tackled with product variants. To solve this, we created a custom integration with Salsify and worked with our partners at Jitterbit to solution a robust integration into their existing Oracle-based platforms. We put our biggest brains together on a custom home store locator experience, saved per device and account through the buying journey all the way onto Custom Checkout, where we can use that info for accurate tax calculations. Gift cards required a custom integration with Blackhawk to check the gift card balance, spin up a gift card certificate that BigCommerce could use in checkout. We layered Searchspring over BigCommerce for stronger search and filtering options that ABC required for a seamless buying experience. ShipperHQ was tapped for their power to control fulfillment options for not only each and every ABC store location, depending on product category (Did you know in Florida you can ship cigars via USPS throughout the US, wine via Fedex throughout Florida, and only pick up spirits? Well, now we’re experts.) We throw quite a lot of fun at ShipperHQ. Maybe we should ship them something for their troubles. As a fun side project, we built a custom channel for the ‘Vault’ using BigCommerce multi-storefront, complete with a custom backend admin panel for the ABC team to control Vault access to only their select, bulk upload/grant and revoke access, and display customer info for their team.

RESULTS

ABCFWS.com launched in December of 2024 with great success. The Vault passed through a successful first test batch of about 10,000 users and will expand to larger buyer groups in the next few weeks. So far BOPIS has driven customers into their home stores where they’re being prompted for upsell and cross-sell opportunities. ABCFWS has been a great client, with a strong vision for the future of integrated online AND brick-and-mortar commerce
